For my fourth quarter independent reading book I decided to read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Everything takes place in a small town in Indiana where Hazel Grace (the protagonist), Augustus, and Isaac (Augustus best friend) live. Another place where the book takes place is in Amsterdam where Hazel, her mother and Augustus (he then becomes Hazel's boyfriend) go to meet Hazel's favorite author in which Hazel got Augustus to admire also. Hazel Grace is the protagonist of the story and also the narrator of the novel. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs at the age of thirteen and is terminal. She falls in love with Augustus. Another main character is Augustus, a sixteen year old with osteosarcoma who becomes Hazel's boyfriend. Hazel and Augustus meet in a Support Group. This is all about two people (Hazel and Gus) that meet in a support group and have cancer. Hazel is terminal and carries an oxygen tank, and Augustus lost a leg, this is only the beginning but it doesn't stop them from having an adventure. The main conflict is time because their biggest fear is that one of them leaves the other, and at the end that happens and it happens face to face.
I think this book is worth reading because it isn't a type of book that you know isn't true but it shows you reality and how reality can be cruel and how time could be used. It is a novel that really speaks the truth. One theme of the story would be isolation. I think John Green did a good job showing this theme because you can see in the book that there is isolation and that their illness separates them from most people. For example, Isaac has a girlfriend at first but while reading the book his girlfriend dumps him because she needs to move on and their illness can make them feel more lonely. I would recommend this book to someone who wouldn't be afraid to read something that shows some part of reality and likes reading romantic and dramatic novels.
