The book I read is called Out of the Dust by: Karen Hesse. Out of the Dust takes place between January 1934 and December 1935 in the panhandle of the state of Oklahoma during the middle of the Great Depression and further in the book there is a Dust Bowl, which is a dust storm. The main character in the story is a girl named Billy Jo, who is strong and courageous., she is 14 years old, and she loves apples. This novel is written in first person, allowing Billy Jo, to describe her life during the years this novel takes place. The author writes the novel in free-verse poems, in the form of journal entries; the novel is historical. The author describes the reality of the Great Depression also known as the Dust Bowl., this caused families to suffer. The main conflict of this story is the people living in that area against nature. Since this is based in the Dust Bowl, everything is destroyed or getting destroyed and how Billy Jo's life is being destroyed or how everything in her life is going bad.
I think this book is worth reading because it is really powerful and it engages you when you start reading. The themes in the story are what make the story so powerful like loss, forgiveness, family, and the environment. I think these themes are very important in life because someday you will experience loss and forgiveness, this can also show how family is important and how you need to stay united. The environment is also something important because with this major event you can see what you can do or not do int the future or how a natural disaster can be prevented. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read anything that is powerful, very sad, and someone that likes history.
