The book that I read is called "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. This book takes place in the year 1964 in South Carolina and the main character in the story is a girl named Lily, a 14 year old white girl that lives on a peach farm with her father, T. Ray who is abusive. The novel starts when Lily is lying on her bed in her room at night and then she hears this buzzing sound in her room. In front of the walls, Lily sees some bees that normally come to her room at night. While staring at these bees, Lily starts to feel this guilt that is always with her, she starts to remember the day her mom died. Lily thinks she killed her mother, when she was little, because she remembers that her parents were arguing and that she took a gun that was on the floor that fell because her mother dropped it and accidentally she pulls the trigger, and since that day she wants to learn more about her mother. The main conflict of the story is that with this guilt she has to face everyday, one day she goes for a walk with her african american maid/ only friend, Rosaleen that gets arrested for confronting three racist men and with this Lily wants to get her out of jail. When Lily gets Rosalyn out of jail, together they run away.
This book is worth reading because the way the book is written is amazing because when you read it, you actually imagine everything in your head like a movie. This is also a great book because it has very important themes that you can see throughout the story like forgiveness and racism. You can see forgiveness in the beginning of the book when Lily starts to think about her mothers death and if Lily dies and they are reunited in heaven will her mother forgive her for accidentally pulling the trigger and you can see racism because in the book there is a part when the three white men start to bully and hit Rosaleen, just because she is black. I would recommend this book to people who like reading sad and kind of painful stories because it is a story were you can feel pain, and there are times where you have to stop reading because it is to painful to think or read about.
